For everyone, Downloads is now a screen of its own and shuffle learns which videos your device can't play and stops landing on them.

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, and WebM -- all played natively, no conversion needed. MKV files even get real thumbnail previews extracted on-device, so you always see actual frames instead of generic icons.

SMB, NFS, and WebDAV -- the three most common file-sharing protocols. If you have a Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, Windows PC, Mac, Linux box, or even a Raspberry Pi sharing files, RandomPlayer can connect to it. WebDAV also works over HTTPS for internet-accessible servers.

Plain SMB is spoken by every NAS, and RandomPlayer connects to all of them. SMB over QUIC is a newer server feature -- SMB wrapped in TLS 1.3 over UDP 443 -- and it has to be switched on server-side. We've verified it against Samba 4.23 and newer with QUIC enabled, and against Windows Server 2025. Synology, QNAP, and other NAS firmware haven't been verified yet. If your NAS says it supports SMB over QUIC, email us before you upgrade its firmware, and we'll tell you what we know -- plain SMB keeps working either way.

It's a Netflix-style way to explore your library, available with Pro on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac. You get a rotating hero carousel at the top, smart rows like Continue Watching and Favorites, card thumbnails with animated previews, instant search, and category grids. On the Mac it sits in a pane you can collapse when you just want to watch. It makes a big library feel manageable and fun to explore.

With Pro, you can download videos for offline viewing. When your server is unreachable, the app automatically shows what's available on your device. An 'Available Offline' filter makes it easy to find downloaded content, and the playlist skips anything that isn't cached. When you're back online, just tap Reconnect.

Absolutely. Every cached and downloaded file is encrypted on your device. The encryption key syncs securely through iCloud Keychain, so your content stays private even if someone accesses your device's storage directly.

Downloads to your device do. On iPhone and iPad they keep going when the app is in the background; on Mac they continue naturally. Queue up a bunch before bed and they'll be ready in the morning. Copying to a drive is different: it runs only while RandomPlayer is open, so keep the app in front until the copy finishes.

With Pro, yes. Plug a USB drive into your Mac, iPad, or iPhone, fill it from your share, and eject it from inside the app before you unplug it. Plug it into another of your own devices signed in to the same Apple Account and the same videos are there, ready to play offline. It works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac; Apple TV keeps playing from the share and from its own downloads. Copying runs only while the app is open.

No. Everything RandomPlayer writes to the drive is encrypted and readable only in RandomPlayer, on your devices signed in to the same Apple Account -- not in Finder or other apps. The drive is a way to carry your own library between your own devices, not a way to hand videos to someone else.

It depends on the protocol. With Pro, SMB over QUIC reaches your share over the internet on encrypted UDP 443 -- no VPN -- when your server has it switched on. WebDAV over HTTPS works from anywhere. Plain SMB and NFS stay on your local network (Wi-Fi or ethernet); for remote access with those, you'll still need a VPN.

Yes! Watch history, resume positions, favorites, and server profiles all sync via iCloud. Start watching on your iPhone, pick up on your iPad, finish on Apple TV. It all just works.

Free users can save up to two server profiles. With Pro, there's no limit -- connect to your home NAS, office server, a friend's library, wherever your videos live. Each profile keeps its own playlist and watch history, and credentials sync across devices via iCloud Keychain.

Yes. Embedded subtitles work out of the box, and the app also picks up external SRT and VTT files sitting next to your videos. Switch between audio tracks and subtitle options during playback from the media info panel.

With Pro, you can download up to 5 files simultaneously (adjustable in Settings). Playback always gets priority, so your current video never stutters while files download in the background.
